What hydrolic fluid/lube do I use in the gear case, tranny case of this old tractor?? Also.. It's a 6V system, but has a 12V battery in it. It started up but is this ok for the system or should I get a 6V battery or is the generator probably already fried? I honestly fon't care if the battery charges.. just as long as it starts

Look for a resistor attached to the small wire to the distributor (not the coil or plug wires). It will be something just wired into the middle of the line which will get quite hot while the tractor is running. It burns off the excess voltage and protects the points from an early death. If it is there, the generator has probably been rewired for 12v and you are fine. The starter wouldn't have needed rewiring; just don't crank it for more than 15 seconds at a time, ever. Don't be distressed if your temperature gauge, if it's electric, reads double.

If you want to do the conversion yourself you will need a 12V coil, a resistor, probably a Chrysler balast resistor would do, and the 12v battery and a rewired generator or simple alternator with voltage regulator included. A small Delco from a junk yard is cheap and easy to install.

A friend converted my boat's engine in about a half hour years ago and it has run great ever since. I hung the alternator off a timber beside the engine, driven by a Ford 302 pulley bolted over the crank fitting.
