hey i am restoring a massey-harris 44. This is my 4-h project and i need to keep moving on it so its done by fair. Well I in the stage of putting it back together and am trying to figure out how much oil to put in the tranny and differentual. There is some slight problams though. I bought a manual for the year my tractor was built and it is sort of different. IT has a diagram in it showing where the oil plugs are and some of them arn't there! I have a plug in the back just above the hitch, a plug in front and a little lower where the axle bolts onto the differentual, a plug directly underneath the tractor and a plug on the top of thetranny case just under the dash board.Only the plug by the right axle and on the bottom of the tranny are in the right spot... according to my cheesy manual. My cerial # is 44-GR-14541.another thing. we put diesal in it to flush it out and put about 12 U.S gallons in it befor it started spilling out of the plug beside the right axle. Me and my dad figured this was the level plug. my manual says to put only 9 gallons in it so i just figured that 9 gallons of diesal is the same as 9 gallons of oil. So would someone tell me all of the tricks to puting oil in it and how much? thanks. 1 more thing. The hydralic system uses hydralic oil, not motor oil right? My dads John Deere 60 uses motor oil. thanks

you filled it correctly. the row crop models hold 12 gallons. the plug overtop of the drawbar is the drain, the plug beside the brake pedal is the level plug, and the one under the dash is the fill plug. put in 90-W trans oil, not gear oil. there is a difference. go to the massey dealer, or tractor supply, and they should have the oil. i pull a MH 44 standard, and i went through the same problem a while ago. hope this helps.

I use 30 awg non-detergent in my 44 Special. Some use a good grade of hydraulic oil. I find most hydraulic oil to be about 20 awg - a lighter weight which might allow a bit more leakage. 30 awg non-detergent is available at most auto stores but be certain it has the ND label for non-detergent.
