I"ve just bought a MF40 digger which has power steering fitted but it is not working at all. I,ve checked the oil level in the pump and topped that up. Wondered if it could be anything to do with the control valve under the steering wheel. How much is this meant to move when the steering wheel is turned? Is there a common problem with these machines that I"m overlooking? Would be grateful for any advice. Thanks. Kevin

Does your steering wheel just spin around with no resistance. If it does it is probably either air in the system or one or both of the cylinders bad That is what causes that problem 90 percent of the time. My web site has a article on it the that tells how to bleed the air from the steering system on the Perkins engines. If the steering is hard to turn it is probably the power steering pump is bad. I have a drawing showing how to hook a gauge to check the pump pressure if you need it send me an email address If I can be of further help email me

When you refer to the control valve under the steering wheel I assume you mean a steering orbitrol ie hydrostatic steering.

If you"re loosing oil at the reservoir it"s usually the seal on the front of the pump - is your sump level rising? If the pump is not right you won"t get any steering at all. Take it off, if possible take it to a hydraulic specialist and get it rig tested. It could be just a relief valve spring broken. If that"s OK do the same with the orbitrol. These systems are usually reliable, they get leaks but rarely fail completely. My money is on the pump.

Hi,
Assuming that you have a similar system to those fitted in the UK, you should look at the following;
If you have an adjustable barrel, you will see a small pin at each end. There should be no wear in the pins or holes. The spool only moves a very small amount and this can easily be lost with wear preventing the PAS from working.
Movement of the top of the column should also be at a minimum, just enough to push or pull the spool about 3/32" ( 1 to 1.5mm).
The drop arms that come from the steering box must also have an absolute minimum of play. Worn ball joints will also affect performance. The system requires a resistance to be met so the power can be 'switched on'. If this is lost in 'play' it will not work.
Good luck
DavidP
