I met an old fella today who had 49 MF. He is doing some light duty work around 5 acres. It fouls # 2 and #4 plugs after a few hours of blade or disk work. I haven't checked his compression yet but if it is tight, would you recommend an oil treatment like Lucas or Marvel before tearing into it? Could it be sticking rings or gum around the valves from not being worked hard? The problem has been with him for several years.

What kind of fouling; black power, or oil? If black powder, it could be the float in his carb not shutting off fuel when the bowl is full. Course if that were the problem you'd think that eventually all would foul.

But it's worth a check; just takes a minute. Drop the bowl, and ever so gently raise the dangling end of the float. By the time the float is level with the carb, the fuel should have stopped flowing.

Oil fouling. I am thinking rings stuck, valve guides worn. I was wondering about using some Lucas or Marvel oil treatment and working the hell out of it for a few hours.

You can tell if it's valve guides by letting it idle for a few minutes and then hitting the throttle. If you initially get a puff of blue smoke it's valve guides.

On stuck rings, MMO is great and we used to pour diesel down the carb until an engine almost died then let it clean up and did it again...let it sit for an hour and do it again a few times.

With a tractor updraft, you need a squirt bottle or somehting to get the stuff to go up.

If its stuck rings I'd put some tranny fluid in each cylinder and let it sit a day or so. Then pull the plugs and turn it over to pump out the excess tranny fluid and then run the $%# out of it far a couple hours. Also if you run a muti weight oil in it I'd switch to say a 40W or 50W oil as that will slow down the fouling of the plugs.
