hi guys, i have a 1953 to-30 which has been converted to 12 volt,,, my question is should i be able to disconnect the positive terminal with the tractor running and it keep running like our older cars do??? i have replaced the battery two weeks ago and it was dead, so i tried the disconnect trick and it died so i assumed it was the alt. took it to autozone and it was bad, replaced it and it still dies if disconnected ,,, not sure if its charging the battery though, guess time will tell ,,,thanks Randy in N.C.

Well if the alternator is wired up right yes you should be able to pull the cable off and have it stay running. So it sounds like a bad alternator or a wireing problem. If you have a volt meter with the tractor running you should get 13-14 volts across the battery if the alternator is working.

Something needs to feed power into your ignition coil if you want to keep the engine running. You can get power from your battery obviously, but to get it from your alternator alone, depends upon how your alternator is energized.
