Starter/Solenoid on 255

I have a 255 that will just "click" when you turn the key. If you do it several times eventually it will turn over and start.

Sometimes I have to click it once-sometimes 8 or 10 times.

I thought it was a bad solenoid so I replaced it but am still having the same issue. Battery is good and starter is relatively new.

What else could be causing this?

I am having the same problem now. I arced over the solenoid and the engine turned over so I thought the soleniod was the problem, now since I have replaced it, I am still getting the issue. What was your fix?

I have a 1979 245 Diesel that had starting problems since new. Solenoids would not last, we put at least a dozen in it.. On advice of the folks here, I took all of the starting circuit wires off, & cleaned, polished & reinstalled them. Put in a new battery & solenoid. Have not had a moments trouble since.

Hi,
Has the tractor been left standing for some time? One possibility is the pinion has become stuck or tight on the armature. If this is free, forget the above. The normal cause of 'clicking' is a discharged battery. Switch the lights on and turn the key. If the lights go down it's likely to be battery. If the lights stay the same, more likely to be starter. Check you earth connections and if necessary make a temporary one with a jumper lead. Lastly connect a small wire to the small solenoid terminal and touch it to the positive terminal on the battery or starter. This will give an indication of where the problem is.

Cheers

DavidP

Almost sounds like a ground problem. I would check the wiring between the solenoid and start switch. I may be as simple as a broken ground wire. Good Luck!
