The pin that secures the drawbar on my MF 285 is stuck. It seems to be firmly connected to the drawbar itself. I've tried prying with a prybar, pounding, heat from a propan torch and grinding flats on the sides so it could be turned wit a big wrench. I've even considered cutting it above and below the drawbar with a sawzall, but I'm not sure I can get a blade in there. Could it be pounded out from the top by removing the drawbar housing? The housing appears to be held on underneath the tractor by 4 bolts. From the picture it looks like it may be welded on as well. Any other ideas?

The bracket is held on by (6) bolts w I beleive 1 1/8" heads. I just had ours off earlier this year because ours was worn very sloppy. There isn't a hole above the pin through the bracket, but you can drill one in, and press it out or use a punch & BFH. It would help to soak it in PB Blaster first, but not nessesary it useing a press. It's not hard to take off, just A LOT of iron above your head. You need to have a way to hold it up once you take out the last bolt or you'll be in a world of hurt. Esp. w/ the drawbar still on.

Steve I just went through this with a 5088 CIH. I had to break down and buy a Rose Bud tip for my ox-actylene torch, straight propane will not get it.Cherry red let it cool and do it again. Good luck.

Just got back from looking at my 285 and it doesn`t have a weld along the bracket. It is bolted direct to the rear end with 4 bolts. I bought this tractor new so know it came from factory this way.

Steve, I don't recognize the pictured drawbar bracket, as compared to my MF690. Do you have the MF Parts Manual? If not, do you have a dealer nearby? Look at the detailed breakdown in the Manual and it will show you how the pin in held in place. My pin is held in on the top; you remove some horizontal pins, drop the complete assembly like a hinge, then remove the top pin to release the drawbar.

On this tractor there is a bracket that slides over the head of the pin, locking it in, and is secured with 2 bolts.

The drawbar housing can be seen from another angle in this pic.

From the pic it looks like there is a line of weld where the housing joins the tractor body. It may be just dirt though. There doesn't appear to be any connections or pins above the drawbar, but the pin may extend into a tubular section at the top of the housing.

Again, by the way they move together, the pin seems to locked to the drawbar by either rust or deformation.

I should also add to my comments from above. the pin is only about 3" long, and only goes through the plate. That tube above it is a larger bore than the pin, and the pin doesn't go that high any way, only through the bottom plate, the draw bar, then the top plate, no longer than that. When I repaired mine I filled in part of the oblong hole w/ weld, reamed it out and made a longer pin that went up a little bit further. It works greta and now I can safely haul wagons down the road again.

If the pin moves w/ the draw bar, spray PB or Kroil on the top, letting it soak down for a day or 2. If you have a brass or copper mallet, this would work well to smack the pin up to break the rust, and not deform the head. By the looks of your drawbar, it's rusted. Ours is covered in oil from a leaky line somewhere, so *no rust*.

Again, I've just went through ahving mine off about 2 months ago, so I know the inner workings of it and it shouldn't be too bad. Just soak it in a GOOD penetrant and give it a coulpe wraps w/ a hammer. should loosen up. As long as you don't pound the groove past the bottom plate, you can pry on it once it's loose.

Steve, something does not look right to me. I have never seen a "direct weld" to the housing like that. Again, I think you should look at the exploded view in the MF Parts Manual, may be on dealer's computer screen, but they can print the page for you. Compare the parts in the picture to what you have, then you can figure out whether you have some "homemade" draw bar system on the tractor.

I"m not farmiliar with this hitch either, but I think from your photos that there is a plate along the top, through which the bracket is bolted. It is this which the side will be welded to, remember that the casing is cast iron so welding a steel fabrication to it would be almost impossible.

I think that if you could get the whole unit off the tractor, soak it in diesel and get it in a press you might get somewhere. You may have to cut a hole in the top plate to press through. I"ve had to use a press on the swinging drawbar stay pins before, but never an anchor pin.

It is very hard to weld cast steel to a dissimilar steel and make it hold such stresses. I suspect there is no weld, just dirt, rust, and grease "welded" together by time.
