Massey 168 Rear differential problem

Hello!

I have a problem with pressure building up to the left rear differential, causing leak over the outer seal. Is there supposed to be a breather tube somewhere in the real axle? The tractor has wet brakes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
You refer to the left rear differential. I assume you mean the epicyclic reduction umit. It is the large round housing just inside the rear hub. It is not uncommon for a slight release of air pressure when you remove the plug. I think that it is unlikely that it is causing your oil leak. There is a breather on the top of the hydraulic cover which should allow any pressure to escape.
According to my information the 168 does not have an inner seal fitted to the epi' unit. The 165's do. Any pressure generated should go to the breather. It would appear that you have a case of seal failure.
Now the bad news; MF initialy suggested that the hub be removed from the tractor and bolted into the wheel which was laid flat on the floor. Using the special puller it was possible with the use of an extension tube to remove the epi' hub to gain access to the seal. MF now recommend a very heavy duty hydraulic puller to do the job. You may be lucky if you can make a suitable puller but a chat and then trip to your nearest MF dealer will probably save money and time. To keep the cost down ask him to just pull the epi hub off.

Good luck
DavidP

Hi, Thx for the info. That was kinda the thing i was afraid the whole time.. With "epi" hub" do you refer to the wheel hub, the plate where the wheel attaches? Or is it something inside the reduction unit, so that i need to remove the whole unit anyway?
Thx for the help, again.

Hi again,
No, sadly that's the bad news. It's not possible to remove the wheel hub (where the wheel attaches) without removing the 12 7/16 UNF bolts that hold the epicyclic hub together. Drain the oil first and remove all bolts except the top one. The hub is heavy so have an assistant to help or some means of support. The ring between the axle case and outer case is an internal gear ring and is also heavy. It can stay with either side so watch your feet!!!!
The internal epi hub will require the heavy duty MF puller mentioned in the last message. With the hub off you will find a retaining ring which holds the outer axle shaft in place. Remove the ring and a press will probably be needed to push the shaft so that the seal can be replaced.
Cheers

Okey thanks a lot for your help man... i"ll ask my dealer to do the seal change but i"ll try to take the reduction unit out by myself since the trip to the dealer is rather long and includes driving thru 2 cities..
