I finally got my 44-6 home wed. night and Ihave a few questions for the massey experts here. I don't have a manual for it yet but I want to change the engine and tranny oil.A new battery and some fresh gas brought her to life and I drove her around a little to warm up the engine. I was surprised how smooth and quiet it was even without a muffler. I had pressure washed it before anything else was done so the oil canister was clean, but in the few minutes that I ran it a lot of oil was pushed out of the top and ran all over the starter. When I drained the oil out of the pan there was no water but when I drained the filter water came out first. Whats up with that? What oil should I put in it,non-detergent, detergent? The tractor smoked a lot and was known to foul plugs, would a heavier oil be allrighht,20w-50w, or a straight 30w.I have no idea what oil was in it before. Wuold it be worth it to change oil again after a couple hours of good running, the oil I just drained is probably many years old. What kind of oil should I put in the tranny and how much does it hold. Should run it a few hours before I change the tranny to warm it up or should I drain it now because I'm guessing it has water in it? Where do you add and check the oil? I'll probably get an owners manual soon, but I want to play this weekend and my shop manual doesn't help much with these items. I look forward to restoring this tractor, but for now I just want it to run while I work on my JD 40 which is presently in many pieces. I also hate to admit that I'm eyeballing a MH 33 with 3-pt and hydraulics. A guy can never have enough tractors and my wife loves them all. Thanks for any info.

Sounds like the power wash filled the air cleaner with water. Those stacks are not water proof and with pressure, water can get inside the can.
I would use a good grade of straight 30W engine oil and change it after about 25 hours use, the first time.
I would also wait to replace the transmission oil and run the pulley while tacking on the 25 hours use.The pulley drive gears will sometimes rust the gears fron long time unuse. You need not hook up a belt to do this.
There are two transmission drain plugs that need to be removed. And since 140 W is sometimes no longer available ,use a good grade of 80-90 W gear oil You really don't need the 140W unless you were going to work the tractor hard for a long time.I think the transmission holds about 13 gallons. There is a plug on the right side of the case to fill to.Filler cap is on the top of the transmission. If the tractor is fouling plugs then the carburetor is running too rich or the float setting is too high.
What year is your tractor?Mine is a 1947.If your 44-6 is a row crop and you get tired of it sometime in the future, let me know.I wouldn't mind having two of them.lol, bob

Also it is a row crop and I think the serial# is 2317 or about that-47 or 48?

Thanks MSB, I may want to sell it someday when its done, but that is a few years away. I plan on giving it a complete overhaul, paint, tires, and countless other small details as time and cash allow. This year it will hopefully rake hay and run an elevator at most. That engine sounds sweet with a straight pipe, I don't even plan on a muffler now because it isn't any louder than our other tractors that all have good mufflers.
