I bought an old MF 3165 at an auction a few years ago. It had a lot of problems, not the least of which was that it had fuel line leaks here and there. I spent a lot of time making/replacing lines. I assumed that these leaks accounted for erratic behavior in how the engine ran. What would happen is that I would bleed the lines and bleed the injection pump until it would start. At that point the tractor would run for a little while, but the engine would die suddenly and for no apparent reason. It would not restart until I had bled out the injection pump. After getting all the lines repaired so there were no more leaks, I got seriously ill, which prevented me from touching the tractor for about a year. I got to it a few days ago and after a little charge on the battery, it started right up even with the old fuel. I ran it for a little while and again it died suddenly. This time I can't seem to get the fuel injection pump to bleed. I can't get any fuel out of the upper vent and only a little bit of fuel out the lower vent. I've never been able to get the fuel to come out the vent as forcefully as I've been told that it would. This has got me to wondering if I need to replace the injection pump. Has anybody got any ideas as to what is causing the problem and if the problem might be fixed by replacing the injection pump?

There used to be a guy with the last name of Austin who used to be on this forum who helped me a lot, but I lost his email address in my last computer crash. Does anybody know who I'm referring to (have his email address?) and is he still around?

Hi Kevin My name is Dean Austin I go by Big Dean on the web I am probably the guy you ask about. I would first change the filters if they are partially plugged or they have any water in them they will cause that problem. If that does not fix the problem then it probably is the transfer pump on the right of the engine I have had a few that had something floating around in the tank and have it suck down over the tank outlet as soon as the engine stops it will float back away from the outlet and the engine will run again till it gets back over the outlet again. Dirt and rust will also cause a restriction in the system usually in the tank shut off valve but there also is a screen in where the line connects to the injection pump to access it the line has to be removed and the fitting the line screws into has to be removed the screen is under that fitting I have saw a few of those partially plugged up. If you have a settlement bowl on the transfer pump it also should have a screen in the top of it. Hope this helps some. If I can be of further help email me.

I have a MF285 tractor. It quit while mowing grass. I changed fuel filters and mowed approx. 4hrs and it quit again. I then changed fuel filters again (the old filters looked clean with no sediment in bowl below filters, thenI drove tractor approx. one mile and it quit again. Can you you give me your thoughts on what might be causing this problem and how I might resolve it?

Kevin, Big Dean replies to many of the forum posts on this site. Last time I e-mailed him, his address was [email protected]. He has been a great help to many us with questions about M-F tractors. He will probably respond to your question. Richard
