I have a 135 with the Z145 Continental engine. I have tuned up the engine(new plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor, cap), cleaned and rebuilt the carb., cleaned out the sediment bowl and the tractor still has a rough idle. It spits and sputters while idling, but when under a load it runs as smooth as silk. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Check your distributor for wear and make sure your timing is correct. Are your valves set correctly? How's your spark? Nice, fat, bluish?Make sure that your wires are hooked up correctly (I know you said it ran OK underload). Make sure that you idle mixture is set right. The idle mixture is usually set to attain the desired rpm with the highest manifold vacuum.

Jerry, I know that the work I've done this far is correct, but I haven't checked many of the items you've suggested. There's a good chance the valves need adjustment and the distributor is probably worn to some degree. I plan to pull the valve cover and check the valve adjustment soon, but wanted to get some input into other possibilities. Thanks for the input.
