How do you check to see if the fuel pump is working. MF 135 diesel. there are 2 line from the filter to the pump. Are they both feed lines. If I loosen those lines should I be able to pump fuel out of them with the lift pump lever? I was bush hoging and the engine started to rev up, means I was running out of fuel but the tank is full and the filter is new. Sounds like my fuel pump quit working. Put sleeves and pistons in last year and engine is still very strong. What next!

One is flow to inj pump, the other return from inj pump.
Unusual for fuel lift pump to fail - slacken bleed screw on inj pump & bleed there to test. Sounds like filter blocked and it"s sucking air from return to tank. Mine does that sometimes. Have you changed both filters? If fuel quality is poor, these can play up after only a few hours.

Hi,
Does your lift pump have a glass bowl attached to it. If it does you will find a brass gauze above the sealing ring which may well be blocked. You should also have a filter that looks like a thimble on the fuel tap in the tank. This frequently gets blocked especially when the fuel level is kept low and the 'rubbish' inside the tank can move around more easily. If you remove the pipes from the lift pump and operate the priming lever you should hear a sort of 'donkey' sound. This is a good indication that the pump is OK. Place a finger over the inlet side and operate lever. You should feel the suction. If neither of these work, remove the pump and do the same using the cam operating lever. Pump repair kits are available from 'good diesel shops' but make sure you put the valves in the right way.
Cheers
DavidP
