I am helping rebuild a Jet Star 3 that with rebuilt 220A-4. This will be a working tractor.

The problem is we have the steering working, but the pump get"s extrememly hot. (water drops sizzle).

Pump not binding and in like new condition (internally). Pump manifold like new and relief valve is set (with shims to 1000 PSI (withing limits).

Steering control valve like new internally and not binding. Checkvalve ball free and clean, and type A pin at 15/16" as specified.

Hoses correctly connected. Manual pump (under steering wheel) moves freely.

All mechanical and front piston in great condition, not binding and lubricated.

The question is: should this particular pump 13+gpm bypassing 2.5gpm for steering get very hot?

Could it be a matter of "chickening out" before system is fully bled? No other accessories installed. Also was returning fluid cycled through return tank or an external cooler?

Thank You,
Steve Lemois
