I have been having some clutch problems on a MF 175 (probably 72 ) Clutch will allow tractor to go into gear when not running but will grind gears when tractor engine is running. this also is same pattern with pto(in when engine not running, grinds when running) Fluid is full, have adjusted clutch linkage no help.

All the things David mention will cause that problem but I have found a lot more of them with the pressure plate release finger pivot pin that had come out, partially out or broke. If it has came out or partially out you can go up through the hole in the bottom of the bellhousing and put it back in. You then have to weld it on each end to keep it from coming out again I have done that several times.

Hi,
Have you adjusted the clutch through the access hole under the clutch housing. If you have done this it sounds like either the clutch plate is sticking on the spline and not releasing when you press the pedal or you have some oil on the plate linings making the plate 'sticky' causing the difficulty in engagement. Both of which would require the tractor to be split.
Cheers
DavidP
