Just curious about filters....

Our Massey dealer gives us an option on which oil filter we want for our 285, the long one or a short one. We always get the long ones, and I don't even think they stock the short ones any more. Yet everytime I go to someplace else for a filter, even other Massey dealers, they look at me like I'm nuts!! There is only the short filter listed for the 285. The long one crosses to a 399.

Do any of you guys run the longer filter, or is it just the ones who go to Vanderloop Implement here in Wisconsin??
Donovan from Wisconsin

Don't worry, I only run Massey filters, and sometimes Hastings if I'm at automotive supply first.

The short filter 1447048M1 is the filter listed for your tractor, but the long filter 1447031M1 will fit and is ok to use.(Part numbers are what we have here in the uk.)

Long filter is for 6 cylinder, short filter is for 4 cylinders. You can fit the long in place of the short (if room) but should not fit the other way around.

Could you post the part number for the longer filter so I can try to cross it over?

The filter is used on a Massey 399, I don't know the part # off hand. If I remember I'll look in the shop when I'm out there later.

Just guessing, the short one was made for clearance problems experienced with the long one....like maybe with a loader.

I've looked up the filter for the 285 in many different sources, and the short one is the only one ever listed, even from MF directly. The dealer had a filter chart on the counter, listing every MF model, American, British, French, etc.... and the 285 only has the short one listed. The dealer just gives us the longer one. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there w/ a 285 runs a longer filter from the dealer.

I run long ones on any engine if I can find one that will fit...Like on my old Chev's I got a long one (can't rembember the #) and on my 98 Dodge I run a Ford Fl-1A as with all my cannister Ford tractors.

I run a fram 2159 (as I recall..not in the shop) on my Kohler lawn mower rather than the high $ one they call for.

You can match the threads and match the gasket diameter. Just takes a little time shopping for what you want. If it has an oil bypass valve it is a little trickier, but most don't.

Never lost an engine; never had a problem.

Your longer filter will give you more cleaning capacity

That's exactly why we always get them. The price difference really isn't noticable. It should also be said ours has about 5970 hrs on it right now. It's just starting to burn oil but it still runs strong. Donovan from Wisconsin
