165, battery draining

I am working on a M-F 165 diesel, straddle (open station) type. It starts and runs fine, keeps battery charged, but when the engine is stopped the battery drains down. This has been worked-around by disconnecting the negative terminal, but is there a proper fix?

From what I've read on this forum, I suspect a diode somewhere, but can't determine exacty where. Is it something replaceable without replacing the alternator? It has an external regulator.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Rick

HEllo Rick,
Your electrical systems in the US are different to ours in the UK. Yes there will be a diode in the system more than likely in the alternator. It acta as a sort of one way valve and allows current to pass from the alternator to the battery. When it fails current flows from the battery to the alternator hence the drain. You do not need to replace the alternator and any decent electrical repairer should be able to do this easily and cheaply.
Cheers

check the switch on the back of the oil pressure gauge. the switch provides power to the charging system when oil pressure closes the switch, which is normally open,if it sticks in the closed position, it keeps the charging system "hot" and it will drain the battery. Good luck, davids
