I"ve used a 3-16 plow on a MF165 quite a bit, and that seemed to be a good match.

I have a 3-12 plow that I use on my MF35, so I"d say your plow is undersized.

I"ve been around someone who tried a 4-14 on a MF65, and it didn"t handle it well. But the 175 might, as it has a bit more horsepower.

And it depends on your soils, too. Some are harder to plow than others.

I used to have a Massy Ferguson (can't remember model now) was a 4-14" semi mount that I pulled with a Ford 5000, same size tractor, that had what was called semi deep tillage bottoms and had to run that plow 8" deep or it would not work corectly (would have prefered 7") and it was set up with the factory mast for the top link sencing that the 5000 had

All my life, Dad had a 3 pt hitch, 3 bottom 14" plow (MF66) that we pulled with his MF165. It worked like a champ. I agree that you may have set up problems... the top link length is where we made the bulk of our adjustments but don't forget that the right lift arm can be adjusted also. That plow sounds a little small for your tractor. I think you may be going to deep but you may also be to far over. I bet your rear tires are bigger than 12" (furrow width) and this may cause some problems. Step 1: adjust the right tires in until you have < 12" from the inside of the tire to the first plow point. If you are more than 12", your first plow will be trying to do the work of a 14 or 16. Step 2: run your right tires up on some 6" blocks SAFELY and set your plow down gently. This will allow you to see what adjustments need to be made so that all 3 bottoms are the same. Step 3: read how to use your draft contol. It will save you a lot of time and frustration and with better results. Hope this helps - ALAN

Dad used to Run a fully mounted 4X14" Kverneland on his 175. Quite a nice match. He might have had to flip the last body up now and again if conditions were poor. I can't see why a semi mount would pull easier than a fully mounted though. Our plow had a depth wheel at the back.

I'm pulling a 3 bottom 18 incher, semi-mtd, behind my 180 dsl, and it seems to be a good match. I think the 180 & 175 share the same engines, but the 180 might be a bit heavier. It's very handy having a back wheel on the plow which is hydraulically operated to aid in controlling the depth and tilt of the plow for various jobs.

Thanks for that info, thats about what I thought I would need. They say the semi mounts pull easier. Im wondering how far apart your rear tires are set center to center to go with that plow? Thanks Lou

Lou - If I've read it right, I believe that you haven't set up your plow correctly. Any plow should plow no deeper than 1/2 it's width e.g. no deeper than 6" with a 12"plow. Any deeper and the furrow will tend to stand on edge rather than lay over. By the way , semi-mounted plows pull harder than fully mounted ones as you are extending the draft further behind the tractor. They are , however , much easier to finish with. Massey's also have top-link sensing which won't work well with semi's.

Jimont,Why is a semi easier to finish with? Our neighbour had a 5X12" Kverneland semi mounted which they pulled with a International 634 (County 4 wheel drive conversion ) and it seemed a right song and a dance when he tried to back it up into corners when it came to do the headlands. Given the choice I would go for the fully mounted.

Roy - You're right, backing those semi's is a chore! What I meant was in plowing the finishes and running water furrows (ditches). The way things are going here in Ontario , there aren't many fence corners to back into anymore ----mostly 100 acre fields now.

Lou,We pulled a 4x16 semi mount MF plow with a 165D (175 gas would not pull it) and a 4x14 mounted with the 65 gas. Good black dirt(20yr of sheep, cows, and a lot of hogs will turn the clay into dirt)!
