I recently bought a 1980 MF265. I had engaged the PTO and went to disengage it and it will not disengage and the PTO is on all the time. When the lever is moved in the disengage position, I feel a little resistance and the lever just pops back out as though there is some spring tension on it. I was told the model I have has a hydraulic PTO which would suggest to me that the lever is nothing more than a means to open and close a valve to supply fluid to the PTO pump? I am going to order a manual but was hoping someone might be able to tell me what might possibly be wrong. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
You are right to a point, the lever does switch on and off oil flow to the IPTO (Independant) clutch, but it is a little more than that. In the 'off' position, oil is supplied to a small brake pad which bears against the clutch drum and prevents it from turning. In the 'on' position, the brake is released. Do you know whether the pto is turning under 'oil drag' or has power with the lever 'off'? If the lever is returning on its own then the spring which holds the lever in either position by using a ball bearing may be broken.
The brake pad can be changed (just) without major stripping but anything else will require removal of the top cover at the very least.

Good luck
