Hello,
Have a 1958 TO 35 deluxe with 4 cly standard diesel 23C. Have rebuilt the entire tractor, new clutch, brakes, seals, bearings, most everthing but the pump.Question is I am getting her back toghter for the 2nd time now, is this motor going to be nothing but promblems or should it be good once I get all the bugs out of her. I hear alot of bad things about the 23C on this board ( mostly about starting). But if a tractor won't start what good is it!! Any one with info?? it would be greatly appreaciated. THANK YOU

Here's my story. Bought mine last September. Had a complete rebuild in late 1997 and ran very good, (I guess; I have nothing to compare it to.) It definately need a small shot of ether to start when cold, but runs fine from that point forward. It never gets over 150 degrees, but maybe the guage is off.
A few weeks ago, I noticed oil in the water, but no water in the oil. At this time it became harder than normal to start. I suspected a head gasket and that was the general consensus from the folks on this board. I replaced the gasket and it runs fine again, and starts as it did with a small shot of ether. The head was amazingly easy to remove and replace, but it was HEAVY.
One more thing. Mine is a 1959 and it has glow plugs. I don't think they're working and from what I understand, they're very expensive to replace.
I really gotta get a manual.

My Massey dealer says the parts are getting more difficult to find, but once again, the folks on this board have plenty of locations where to get parts.

Chuck

Hey Chuck , I could find the glow plugs for my 59 23c , $55 a piece , What I couldn"t find was the resister for them . I got a local machine shop to make me adapters to thread into the holes in the head , with holes in them for Autolite 1111 glow plugs . Wired them in parralel ( they"re for a 12vdc system ). Plug in heater for 1 hr , use glows for 10 seconds no more (learned the hard way , twice ) , turn key oposite way and we"re running . No either needed . Unles its 70 deg out I plug it in . Had adapters made and bought 1111 glowplugs for les then 4 mf plugs I couldn"t use without the resister anyhow . Mike

Hi Mike.
Once again, I appreciate your input.
I would also like to thank you publicly for your help when I was working on the Fergy. It was the encouragement I needed.

Chuck

I bought one about 2 years ago and had a couple of years of heartache. That being said, I absolutely love it now that everything is working properly. Internals of the engine had been renewed, but not re-assembled properly, and the injector pump was in need of outright replacement. It would just not start in any cold weather, ether, plugged in or not, constantly overheating after only an hours use. Now that the timing is correct, new pump, injectors, etc...It fires up fine, is quiet running, good on gas, sounds great and does not overheat. In the cold around here, if plugged in for about 45 minutes (mine is on a timer in the winter so it is ready when I wake up or return from work) it starts with no trouble at all. It also has the thermo-start system (intake manifold heater not the cylinder glow pulgs)which is used plugged in or not, for about 20 seconds.
Only thing left to do is block off some of the rad (not all of it) for the cool weather operation. I do not load up the tractor enough in the winter to let is get up to full operating temp, and therefore it does still smoke a bit. Once heated to operating temp (at least 170 by my guage) there is no smoke at all.
Finally, every part was still available (not in stock but only a day or so delivery) through my local Massey dealer.

A bit long winded, but in the end I love my 23C.

I Have a Massey ferguson 1958 fe35 with the 23c engine and have found no problem with starting as long as i give the engine a half minute of heat first ,then for the rest of the day its starts with the first touch and it only has one heater in the manifold
