I just purchased a MF 35 with a 3 cylinder Perkins. It has an engine knock. Should I be worried about this and how can I fix it?

It is a 3 cylinder diesel. The engine knock is fairly consistent with rpm and load. It is louder than I would expect, but I haven"t heard another one run before. Is there ever a need to adjust the injector pump timing?

My guess, on older high hour tractors, gear wear may retard the timing slightly.

Why you ask?

My perkie is noisier than any other diesel I've heard, but I think it is what perkie's sound like. It is a consistent rymethc sound; present while operating at a fixed speed, but noisier as I said, upon accelerating.

On timing, your engine should accelerate quickly; not like a 327 Chevy hopped up, but a nice snappy response; no hesitation; crisp and clean.

If you fool with it (the timing) you don't want to loose you current position, and only move it ever so slightly in small steps, and DON'T HAVE IT LOOSE WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. Gotta stop, adj, start, stop, adj, start.....It is not a distributor on a gas engine.

What kind of knock? They make a pinging noise, or rattling (unlike any other engine I've heard) when accelerating, especially under load. Guess it is has to do with their indirect injection.

parts man is right. but is this knock above the normal knock of a diesel they knock when they are ok and some knock more then others. if this is your first diesel find some one that runs diesel and have them give you advice. you did not say it is a diesel but if it's a gas better find the knock fast

An engine knock is always cause for concern, you better go looking for it, before it finds you! Could be various causes, one of the most common is worn crank bearings.
