I am a first time tractor owner of a 1964 Massey Ferguson 65 with a Continental 176 gas engine. My father and I were cutting some pasture and the tracor died out suddenly. We thought the fuel had run out(it was really low) and refilled the tank.

Now the tractor cranks and cranks but will not start, only white puffs of smoke from the exhaust. The tractor had been starting easily before. Trying to find some sugestions to start troubleshooting.

I want to repair this myself because my wife is already on me for a rather expensive water pump replacement at a local garage.

Turns out the points were bad. My Dad and your advise helped me troubleshoot the problem. Changed out the points and it popped right off. Thanks for all your help.

This is a great tractor to operate!

Texas may have it. If you try what he says and it doesn't work you may not be getting gas to the carb, pull the plug out of the bottom and you should get a good flow it not you may have a clogged fuel system. Other thing to check is do you have spark?? Hows the points when was the last time it was tuned up.

White puffs mean flooding to me. Pull off the air hose running from the air cleaner to the carburetor. If when you pull it off, gasoline drips on the ground, this means the float and needle and seat stuck open when you ran out of gas. Leave the hose off and let the carb air out a bit. Then try starting again. If it starts, replace the hose.

If no gas comes out, try squirting some starting fluid in the carb air opening and try cranking again. If that starts it, you may have air in the fuel lines or and obstruction in the fuel lines.

A lot of times, the actual starting of the engine clears the problem.
