FE35 Over Revving

I have an FE35 with a Standard 23C four cylinder diesel engine. After working for about an hour on Saturday the engine started to spontaneously rev quite highly even though I hadnt adjusted any throttle. I moved the throttle lever backwards and forwards a few times and the revs eventually came back down, but I dont believe my moving the lever actually caused the revs to come down. The same thing happened a couple of more times so I got the tractor back into the shed where it duly stopped running. I wasnt able to restart it at the time and I havent tried to restart it since but Ill be back up there next Saturday to have another look.

Does anyone have any ideas what might have occurred or what I should check for?

When one of my tractors run out of fuel they start over-revving for a short while before dying. Your problem sounds similar. Check if you have fuel. Rust in an old tank can also block the outlet or the fuel pump. The rust often only becomes a problem when the tank is nearly empty - it seems to wash the rust toward the outlet then.

A possibility could be air ingress. I found that when I run one of my tanks out of fuel on my F*#d pickup the engine can rev quite freely and it surges. Maybe check all fitting from tank to injectors.
Just a thought

Thanks Gary

I had suspected the problem could be air/fuel mixture related, but I wasnt sure if the type of surges Ive been getting also occurred with diesel engines. Ill tackle the problem on that basis and see how I go.
