I have an old Diesel MF135 which has been running fine. Saturday I started it and after about 5 seconds there was a pop and it died. Engine turns over fine but won't start. The pop was from the right side of the engine and I think it might be the fuel pump. Any ideas?

Got it running again. Still don't know what the pop was but guess it doesn't matter now.
Thanks for all your help.

Test the fuel pump for adequate and sustained pressure. Check for fuel in the crankcase, if the diaphragm ruptured you'll find some.

Thanks for the info. I think I have caused my problem. I checked the fuel tank and it is bone dry so I may have just run out of fuel. I didn't check before starting, but thought I still had enough. It looks like there may have been a fuel leak under the filter (on the ground) which I did not see due to weeds. The fuel filter is way over due to be changed. Ran out of several years ago and had a lot of trouble bleeding the lines and now not sure how I did it.

Replace the filter insuring that you clean crud out of everything and don't get any in while you are doing it.

Vent the filter via the screw on top of the filter till solid fuel comes out. May take awhile as the whole filter has to fill before it comes out the top. If using an inline pump and have a primer pump, prime pump.

Crack all fuel inlet lines at the injectors and turn engine over till solid fuel escapes. Tighten nuts.

Attempt to start tractor. Usually you have to move the throttle all over the place to find some place it likes.

If you can get it to hit on it's own, go back and let the air out of each injector, one at a time. Every time you visit one and leave, the engine should pick up smoothness and rpm's.

If it won't hit, let the starter rest for half an hour and go back and bleed again. Eventually you will succeed. Sometimes it comes in first try.

Sometimes you didn't get all the air out of the filter and it will run for say an hour or so and die for no reason. Go thru the bleed again. Had to do it 3 times on a 3 cyl Ford to get it right.
