I'd appreciate thoughts from you experienced folks out there about cutting grass. I've got a 1965 MF 35 pulling a 5 foot International bushhog, cutting 7 1/2 acres of grass. The PTO can run in either engine proportional or ground speed proportional modes. Which is generally better for cutting grass? I'm thinking if you ran engine proportional, in really thick growth you could shift to a lower gear and/or range; then you could move through it more slowly, but since your engine RPMs would be higher, you'd get better cutting performance out of your bushhog at the same time. If you ran ground proportional and slowed down, so would your bushhog, and cutting would be worse just when you needed it most (in thick growth.) Am I guessing right, or off base? Thanks for your help!

Ga. Boy, You are correct in assuming that you will need to use the engine drive PTO for mowing. In fact you will likely use the engine drive pto for almost any use. The ground speed drive is usually only used to drive implements that are sensitive to the actual speed that the tractor is traveling. One example might be a PTO driven fertilzer or seed spreader. I use a MF-135 with the 3 cyl. Perkins Diesel to mow with a 5 ft rotary mower as well. I usually drive with the transmission in L-3 and the engine at around 1500 rpm. to mow. Im from NE Ga myself, what part of the state are you from. Click on my name and send an email if you wish.
