tractor had been running ok, just sputtering a lot and black carbon by muffler. last week would only run with choke wide open, and then ran rough.
got carb repair kit and cleaned out carb completely, installed parts per instructions, adjusted the float, ect. only on my carb there was only 1 small jet. in the instructions they show 3; idle jet, power jet, and economizer jet. my one small jet was on the underside of the bowl cover. put it all back together, cleaned oil bath filter assy, turned open fuel valve, opened choke, and tried to start. engine will turn over but not start. Am I missing something here? first time rebuilding carb, but thought I covered everything. I have mf35, continental z134 eng, with marvel schebler carb. also noticed fuel now leaking from throat area of carb where hose to air breather connects and also from fuel drain. guess some plummers tape and some new hose might correct those though.
thanks, mike

If it would only run with the choke pulled out it was probably starved for fuel. I had this problem with a MF20 3cyl gas and it wasn't solved until I unscrewed the entire sediment bowl assembly from the fuel tank. It was hard to believe how much trash came out. The trash would clog the intake pipe in the tank and starve the tractor for fuel. The sediment bowl always appeared full so I devoted my efforts to the fuel line and the carb, to no avail.

Sounds like you have a float/needle problem and its flooding. You may not have set the float right or the float needle isn't seating right.

the sheet in the carb kit said the bottom of the float should be app 1/4 " higher than the rim of the bowl. it was way higher before. also, in the needle and seat...the new one has a small metal spring clip that in the illustration shows it sliding onto the needle, keeping tension on the float. the old one just sat in the seat with no spring. is that the correct way to install it?

That spring should hook to the lip of the float so when the float goes down it will pull the needle down with it, that maybe where your problem is if you didn't hook it that way.

well Ive had that carb apart now about 4 times. I hooked that spring like you said, so it would pull the needle out when the float was raised. still no luck...I got it to start, but then sputtered and died..seemed like it wanted me to keep the choke out..but then died either way. then it wont start up at all. when I take the carb off it is full of fuel(drainplug is a bugger to get on and off). the only other thing I notice is the throttle lever does not seem to be really moving the linkage much although I hooked it back up same way it was. I am starting to get really %^^^$$##@@ frustrated..any help appreciated.
thanks, mike

Gas out the air intake definitely indicates flooding, which usually is caused by needle and seat problems, and can be very dangerous as it leaks onto exhaust, etc. Also, did you remove the brass jet in the very middle of the bottom portion of the carb, the one that has multiple very small holes into a tube arrangement? That is the one that often gets clogged. Requires a deep socket to remove and I forget the size, but it's small, maybe 9/32 or some such. Blow it out and squirt carb cleaner thru all the holes after you remove it.

IM THINKING THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE LINKAGE..THE THROTTLE LEVER FLIPS AROUND A LOT NOW AND THE LINKAGE CONNECTING TO THE CARB HARDLEY MOVES AT ALL. GUESS ILL GO HOME TONIGHT AND LOOK IN THAT AREA..THANKS
