I've got a 1970 MF135 (3 cylinder Perkins gas engine) that recently started to smoke occasionally. Neighbor says it needs valve seals replaced. My question is - Can they be replaced without removing the head?? Thanks in advance.

i just finished a rebuild on a MF 35 with the perkins diesel and it does not have valve stem seals. The valve guides are tall enough to limit oil entering the combustion chamber

was thinking of doing it on my MF135 gas, did it several times on automotive engines

make sure that cylinder is at TDC compression stroke, put trany in gear to keep it there, this is an IMPORTANT step

rig air pressure to cylinder with compression tester hose to hold valves up in place, some break porcelean out of old sparkplug and braze something up to work

compress valve springs, remove keepers, washer and springs and seal should be right there, I think they are only on intake valves

KEEP HELPERS AWAY FROM AIR HOSE UNTIL YOU HAVE KEEPERS BACK IN!!!!! !

Also want to plug all holes with paper toweling so those flying keepers won't go down the DRAIN!I lost on in a 4 cyl Wisconsin engine. The darned thing went to the oil pan.
