I have a chance to buy a 1947 John Deere A with loader for $1,200.00.
The outfit is clean and in good running condition but is narrow front.

I also have a chance to save a few bucks and buy an early 1950's Massey 44 Standard (Wide front)for $800.00

The loaders are identical, the A is in a little better shape but I would prefer a wide front.

I guess what I am after is some advice from anyone who has used these models with a loader.
Which one would you buy? I realize that neither tractor is ideal for a loader without power steering or live power.

I know this is the Massey board, but I should get good unbiased advise here.

I have a MH 44 Special with a wide front and a loader. It steers really hard. I had an A with no loader and it steered easy. Steering would probably make my decision. However, the Harris Guy is absolutely right. That hand clutch is going to be a real problem trying to run a loader. For a lot of other things it is OK. I sold my A and kept the 44 Special. If the price was higher for the Massey and it would be in a bit worse condition, I'd still rather have the Massey! I'm not real keen on standard but I'd still pick Massey. Incidentally, I have not regretted selling my A for even a fraction of a second and it was in good shape, too.

I have ran a John Deere A with a front end loader. It is quite an experince. You have a hand clutch, hand throttle, one or two hand shift levers, depending on the year, hand hydrulic controls, and of course a hand steering wheel. Most of us don't come equipped wilth that many hands. Just thought you should consider this.

Check the steering on the 44 Standard. If the steering wheel is being turned, does the steering box "shift" at all, from the 3/8" bolts being loose/broken? How much 'play' in the steer shaft? Shoe brakes function? Central hydraulics would
help, but not all standards came with them. The
A is.... somewhat crude on features, when you
operate a decent condition 44. Loaders wear out all front ends, so check both for loose parts, welds, hack repair. Good luck.
