I have a 135 (uk) Massey. The clutch will not dis-engage the tranny. I have adjusted the clutch as per the book. Any other Ideas?

Hi Ken
Have you adjusted the cluth internally through the plate under the bell housing? If the adjustment is correct it would appear that the clutch plate is stuck to the fly wheel. An alternative is that one of the clutch linings has broken up and instead of having two thicknesses of lining you may have three at one point on the fly wheel. Remove the plate and turn the fly wheel until the pto adjuster screw becomes visable.
Have an assistant press the pedal fully and observe the movement. Turn on to the next adjuster and compare the movement, and the same for no. 3. If all move the same then it looks like a sized plate. Sometimes you can free them by driving in one of the higher gears and with the clutch pedal down, stamp on the brake pedal.
Be warned that you do run the risk of breaking the clutch plate.
Good luck, come back if any more help needed.
David P

Does it just drag, or is it "locked in"? Dragging, or not completely disengageing could be an adjustment of the Pplate fingers, rust or binding of the disk on the splines of the input shaft, or a small amount of oil or grease on the clutch surfaces can make the clutch drag. If it simply will not disengage, likely a broken finger on the Pplate.

Even if you stand on the clutch the gears grind in and out of gear. when you put in gear you are moving. with the clutch in or out. so how do I fix my problem?

Assuming it is stuck to flywheel and not just in need of adjustment: Put a plow behind it. Crank it in gear and drive it to a field or someplace you can plow and no danger of hitting anything. Crank it in the highest gear you can and feel safe driving it. Drop the plow in the ground, again, not faster than you feel safe doing so. Sometimes this will break it free. This is Big Dean's method. Some people say drive up to a big tree and push against the tree, but i like the plow method better. I had this happen once when a mouse climbed inside the bellhousing thru the ignition timing hole and made a nest for the winter. Next spring the moisture from the mouse and its nest had frozen my clutch.

I own a mf 50 backhoe,i had the same problem i tried running into trees , but no good you really dont want to break something. What i did is i took a 2x4 and proped it so the clutch was pressed down all the way . Then i took a can of wd-40 or liquid wrench or any rust penetrant. I sprayed the clutch disc and plate and flywheel.I did this for a week and played with it also if you have a putty knife see if you can get between the disc and fly wheel. good luck, it worked for me

Has the tractor been sitting idle for quite a while? If so the clutch disc might be "frozen" to the flywheel.

yes the tractor sat all winter and the clutch is probably frozen to the flywheel. again is there a fix short of a major tear down?

I had similar problems with FE35 with Perkins diesel. Old clutch was badly worn and tractor was dangerous to drive, even though 'fixed' by local MF dealer. Eventually solved it by replacing all of the two stage clutch assembly. I did it myself as had lost confidence in dealer. The job was quite easy after following instructions from Big Dean and Jack in NB.
