We own an 1970's (something) MF35 gas tractor. We notice that when we use the PTO under load such as a using the snowblower we get a knocking noise, it seems to come from the front of the transmission or the back of the engine. After the PTO is running like this for awhile it become very difficult to switch gears without grinding them ....even with the clutch fully depressed. (The tractor will even creep forward or back slowly with the clutch depressed).

We only get this hard gear switching and knocking when we use the PTO. It is a live PTO.

Another problem(I don't know if it applies to this case), is that the clutch will only engage when it is at the top inch or so of pedal travel.

We are guessing that the problem is with the clutch....does this sound right? I can't really explain where that knocking noise would come from..

Thanks for any help....

Martin, I think the 35's were discontinued in about 1964 MF switched to calling them 135's after that. My 135 had a loud knocking one time that sounded like it was going to disentegrate. I was plowing with a lift type turning plow at the time. The problem was that the lift handle was going too far up into the constant pump setting area. The knocking was the hyd pump. May or may not be your problem.
