Hi - I having a hard time getting the outside oil cannister (holds the oil filter) to seal. The leak occurs around the edge of the can. So I had a feeling that the bolt was bottoming out. So I put a washer outside on the bolt. When I did that I had to pull off a little cone shape washer which was falling apart. Well when I put it together the leak around the can dissapeared but it was leaking around the bolt. So off I went to the dealer to get a new washer. Well they dont make them any more (it was a cone shaped seat on the can only made for a little while.)So they gave me an o- ring and a fiber washer. Well I put it together and everything sealed fine. Untill later that day when it started to pour oil around the can again. Any ideas why - thanks Kevin

The gasket most likely shrunk a little. Stretch it out so it fits, and put it back in. It's a common problem and I've run into it myself once or twice.

Hi Kev,
Leaks from any part of the oil canister are not common. First of all remove the can and make sure that the sealing ring is not twisted in the groove. We have also found two rings fitted in the past. Clean the can off and put it upside down on a very flat surface. A piece of glass should do and check for any distortion on the sealing face. Next, measure the diameter of the can at several points to check if it is oval in any way.
For the leak at the bottom, a new O ring will normally cure it. Or perhaps you can cut a washer from a plastic can perhaps. Check to see if the area around the bolthole has been crushed by overtightening. If it has, it should be removable by supporting the bottom of the can on something like a bit of 2 inch tube and gently 'dressing' the edges back with a piece of wood or 3/4 inch bar in the can and a hammer.
Good luck
David P
