In a nutshell, turn the key the wrong way, hold it for ten to fifteen seconds to pre-heat, and then turn it even further the wrong way. It should start right up. In your situation last fall, I couldn't figure out how to operate the pre-heater. Never thought to turn the key counter-clockwise until Mark sent me a copy of the instructions off his tractor. Be sure the fuel shutoff is pressed in. Don't over-rev a cold engine. I usually start my Perkins at about 700 rpm, then gradually let it work its way up to 1200. If you are in a building you will want to get it outside as soon as possible, though: it is a diesel. There is a good chance the safety-interlock on the gearshift has been disconnected. This will allow the tractor to start in gear, so be sure you are seated on the tractor before turning that key. If the interlock is not disconnected, you will need to have the tractor out of gear and, (I think -- mine has no interlock) have the Hi-Neutral-Lo shifter in neutral before it will start.
