I'm going to look at a MF35 model on Friday and need to know what to look for on these tractors. What are some of the more common problems? All I know about the thing is that it is a 4 cyl. diesel(Perkins he said) and that it has live PTO. What kind of HP am I looking at in this tractor? I'm only looking to get live PTO as I have an 8N now and get very frustrated at its' PTO! Let me know what to look at and give me some hints.
Thanks,
Matthew

Looked at the tractor today and found the following. It was made in Canada and # 202468.
He didn't have any equipment to put on it(only used it to drag a disk) so I stood on the arms and I could feel them slowly leak down with me(190#). He started the engine both times with starter fluid and you would get a big puff of smoke both times until it warmed up some and it would still smoke a little then. The smoke appeared to be more black than blue to me. It ran and drove fine in all gears but would smoke while driving it. It needs some brake work as both leak and have weak brakes. It has a small leak at one of the cylinders and he said that his dad told him some new injectors would help the smoke(thinking it was too much fuel??? Possible?)It had very very good tires and he told me he would take $2000 for it. I don't want to buy a headache, and asked if I could bring someone else by to look at it for me and he said anytime whether he was there or not. I don't mind putting a little money into it(less than $1000)but don't want to spend over that as I can buy a 135 for about $3500. What do you think?
Thanks,
Matthew

I have a fe35 4cyl std and everyone here in Aus i spoke to before i bought said they were/are a great machine. Everyone was right.
Yes they are a little hard to start in the cold but a strong battery and a bit of cranking gets mine going every time.
I was warned off using aero start or similar as if you get it wrong and use to much you can damage the rings.
Good luck and enjoy your machine, I know i do!!

Big Dean"s website has a lot on what to look for when buying an MF tractor:

It may not be on the first page - I don"t remamber. But it"s definitely worth reading.

As far as I know, the MF-35 four cylinder diesel was a Standard and the Perkins engines were all 3 cylinder in MF-35 and MF-135.

34 or 35 hp. Much greater utility than the 8N (I had an 8N once, I have a MF-135 now).

I've read here that the Standard diesel tends to be hard to start.

Thanks for the info! I searched as much as I could and read Big Deans web site(lots of info there). It appears the engine will be a standard, so if I buy what are some tips for easier starting of this engine? Matthew

No big deal, I"ve got the 4cyl. in a Workbull loader. A quick squirt of "Start Ya Bastard" and off she goes. Only needed when cold.

Our MF35 with the four banger is a hard start. But it is a good machine, has over 14,000 hrs on it, one rebuild. My Dad used to use it for everything, including running a batch drier continuous for 2 or 3 weeks every fall.

This is off topic, but how closely is this standard engine related to the ones in the old Mercedes Benzs'?

About the same engine was used in Triumph cars made in England. I'm intrested if Standard made engine for Mercedes.

I don't have starting problems in my MF35 with 4-cyl Standard. She has heater-plugs in every cylinder. Look diagram:
