Could anyone out there give me their opinion of which oil to use in the tranny of my F40,Mineral Oil or the newer type of tranny/hydro oil!! And why!! I wanna keep this thing running another 50 years. I would appreciate any input.

Farm Boy... You are the loaded question. Everyone has a different opinion....

But here is mine. I use what was originally specified. That is 90 wt straight mineral oil. In todays lingo that is GL-1 90wt. Gear Lube. It is MF Spec 1103 oil. MF 1103 is harder to find off the shelf and is ~$37/5 gal. at a MF dealer.

GL-1 oil is readily available at NAPA auto parts and is spec # 65-205. If not in stock they can get it in a day or two so call ahead. It ran $25/5gal last summer.

If your hydraulic seals are in good order you can use the Permatran III oil recommended for newer MF tractors this is MF spec. 1129A oil and a lot of the trans/hydro oils you can get will be to this spec.

It is not recommended to use GL-3,GL-4 or GL-5 oils or straight hydraulic fluid. The GL-3 to GL-5 oils are called EP oils, or Extreme Pressure. They are made for heave use gear boxes here the force in the gear teeth can squeeze to oil off the teeth and causes wear. These oils have sulfur added to make them hold up the wear and tear of Modern Heavy equipment.... However, the sulfur has been shown to cause corrosion to yellow metals.... The type of metals used in the MF bearings.

Characteristics between MF 1103 (GL-1) and MF1129A (trans hydro):

The combination of a hydraulic system and a transmission system has requirements that are at odd with each other. A transmission wants thick oil so that it stays stuck to the gear teeth to prevent wear. A hydraulic system wants thin oil that flows quickly and thus make the hydraulics respond faster.

The GL-1 is thicker than the Trans/hydro oils. It is a good mix of the two requirements. In cold weather the lift can be slower but I have found that in five minutes of use you heat up the oil and it works fine.

The trans/hydro is thinner than the GL-1. It is a good mix between the two requirements; however, as it is thinner it is less forgiving to leaky pump seals... Hydraulics my not hold up as well etc.

For more Info see Big Deans page and/or the articles section of this site. Both have good info to help you make your decision...

Again I like to use what was specified (GL-1) I think a lot use the other just because it is easier to get. But GL-1 is around and is available.

Jeff
