Hi there
I'm a city boy on a mission
I opened up the tranny fill plug today to check the fluid level and very thick brown sludge globbed out. this is obviously no the most beneficial for my old girl, but I don't know what to to replace it with. can anybody tell me what I should put in the tranny and how much. could this be the reason why my pto wont engage, it is not noisy it just wont mesh at all. while were at it whats a good spring/summer crankcase oil?
thank-you in advance-I'm gonna go install the new hoses for the loader-very exciting indeed.

Drain it and flush it.There are two plugs to remove. One is under the transmission and the other at the rear of the differential/bull gear housing.I would put about 8-10 gallons of kerosene in it and drive it around for a little bit after I drained out the old gear oil. Then drain it and refill it with 80-90w gear lube unless you intend to do heavy field work with it.In that case,I would use 140w gear lube. There is a fill level plug on the right side just under the pulley drive.I think it takes 13 gallons to fill it.My book says 8 but that doesn't nearly fill it.You may have had some condensation that has rusted the PTO shifter and or shaft considering the color of the gear oil as you described it.Remove the cover that the PTO lever and gear shift are located in and lift the cover off.I would do this before I flushed and refilled the transmission case. That way the crud and rust you might find will be flushed out too.

I would use a medium duty straight 30 w engine oil in a tractor of this age.

Darran gave you the corect advise, I would also check the big rubber gromet at the bottom of the gear shift lever,it could be cracket or missing. A lot of rain water can run down that handle and soon spoil your new oil. Harold
