Hi, I have an MF 65 Diesel (Perkins AD4.203) which I have recently rebuilt the engine. This included crankshaft regrind, new bearings, oil pump, sleeves and pistions. The head was also completely overhauled with new valve seats, valves, inserts and springs. I work this engine fairly hard rolling corn. When the tractor is warmed up and is reduced to idle speed a loud knocking sound can be heard from the top left hand side of the engine, it will disappear again if the engine rpm is increased. It only occurs at an idle speed. Otherwise the engine sounds very sweet. Does anyone know what this could be? I set the valve clearance to 0.010 hot. Could somebody print the procedure for settings this? (just in case I got it wrong.) Thanks in Advance...

Hi Dev,
Is this a knock as opposed to a "tick"? Tappet adjustment is unlikely to cause a knock unless perhaps you have a broken valve spring. Is it possible that anything has been left on top of one of the pistons? You haven't mentioned small end bushes. Were these replaced?
Please let me know.
Regards
David P

Hi David, The noise is a knock, and it is loud enough to make me want to shut the engine off for fear of doing damage! This noise was not in the engine before the rebuild. The small end bushes, gudgeon pins, pistons, rings, main and big end bearings were all replaced, as were the valve springs. I also thought that maybe something got sucked in the air intake and managed to get on top of one of the pistons, but then wouldn't the noise always be there, even when cold and running at a higher rpm?. The noise only starts when the engine is at a low idle after it has been worked hard for some time lets say at half trottle. The noise can be stopped by increasing the rpms slightly.
This leads me to think that expansion is causing the problem, what are your thoughts? Would a lack of lubrication to the valves cause them to stick? Should there be a strong flow of oil coming from the rocker assembly or just a trickle? I plan to take of the cover on top of the head soon to see if I can find anything that might cause this.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Hi Dev,
FIrst was the oil pump replaced? Can you confirm that the correct size BE Shells were fitted? Have you had the crank ground?
It's possible to over tighten the lock nut on the tappet and split the tappet. This will cause the tappet to stick and hold the valve open until the piston comes up and hits it.
With the rocker cover removed turn the engine over and watch the operation. You should see if one is slow or sticks. Any lack of lubrication to the valves will normally cause a squeak.
A trickle of oil is OK as long as it reaches all
the arms. It will find it's way to the valves.
Have a look at these thoughts and come back.
Cheers
David P

Hi David, The oil pump was replaced, the crankshaft was also reground with the .030 oversize bearing shells which the shop that reground the crank supplied. I also fitted oversized thrust washers for the crank. I bought a new oil pressure pipe today (50 it sounded like alot for a simple pipe) to get the oil pressure guage working. With the tractor running at idle the guage moved completly all the way to the right and stayed there even when the tractor was hot. I assume the guage must be faulty? it returns to zero again with the engine switched off.
I also took the rocker cover off today. I noticed that most of the oil runs down on top of the tappets. While the area around the bottom of the valves appears wet higher up the valves appeared dryer. Of course I could not make the noise happen when I wanted it too. So there was no sign of any valves or tappets sticking and everything seemed to be moving up and down effortlessly. My plan at the moment is to clean the rocker assemply out thouroughly. How are the plugs removed at either end to clean the inside of the pipe? Put it all back to together and hope for the best.
Thanks for your help....

dev, did you check the piston height (bump clearance) before fitting the cylinder head? there is a maximum height tolerance for the top of the pistons from the top of the engine block, if it is excessive, the piston tops will bump your valves/ cyl head when it comes up to T.D.C. cheers and good luck.

Hi Sibby, Yes I had the pistons "topped" because they were rising too high due to the top of the block being skimmed. Ive cleaned out the rocker assembly and reset the valve clearance. I think thats all I can do at the top end for the moment.
Cheers and thanks...
