I have a voltage regulator that is indicated as a replacement for ones on tractors with a generators like MF35,65,85,135 and more. Can anyone tell me what the charge current cutout on these tractors is. I have another application where I need a 10 amp cutout and wonder if this regulator will work. I came by it new but cheap and without any documentation other than the tractors it will work on. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Lots of variables. Usually on 12v systems a 30 ampere limit is suitable for an ammeter. Usually after startup, an alternator can push the needle over pretty good, but it is only there for a few seconds and gets back to 20 and progressively down.

If you get a 60 ampere, it is hard to see most of the action which is 10 amps or less.

I am satisfactorily using 30's with my 12v systems, both gen and alt.

Setting of the VR really doesn't matter all that much. 20 amperes would be reasonable, but your alt wire is usually 10 AWG which will handle 30, and the meter will handle 30.

Suit yourself.

Just as a follow up. I started up the 35 yesterday (after posting to you). It has a 1 terminal alternator and had been sitting, and the temp was low, so I was on the starter for a bit.

I started it up and while backing out at idle, I noticed the ammeter wasn't working; but that's ok as the single terminal alt has to be excited and it takes revving up the engine to do that.

So after backing out I did a roommmmm m with the throttle. The ammeter (+/- 30 amp) jumped to 20 amps and sat there for a few seconds (told me that was the regl set point.....in this alt...(internal regl), and then moved down to 10 and then more slowly worked it's way down toward zero. I mowed for about an hour and it never went all the way to zero, but was bobbing which was telling me the regl was at min current and was kicking in and out.
