Hello everyone. I`m hoping someone here can help me. I`ve got 1964 Massey Model 85 that I have replaced the hydraulic pump on.To do this the tractor is split at the transmission, the pump removal a reinstall was no problem. However I`m am having one heck of a time getting the two halves of the tractor back together. The problem is that there the lower shaft from the tranny which drives the pump and is connected by a female splined coupling , which is carter keyed to the pump side shaft.I cannot for the life of me get the front (tranny side) to mesh into the coupling.I`ve tried pushing it on a few hundfred times and also have tried lining it up it close and using bolts to pull it together all Ive succeeded in that method is shearing several keys.I`ve been going back and forth for 3 days now trying to get everything lined up to no avail.Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.Thanks.

Martin

I've had my MF165 split acouple times. When I put it back together I use a 1 1/16" or 1 1/8" socket and a long extention on the front of the crankshaft and turn it with a rachet. I also use bolts in the case holes to line up the cases, not to pull or force them together. You can also put the PTO in gear and turn the PTO shaft, if it is the engine/ground type PTO. Lee

did you take the coupler out?if so, you may have it in wrong. it is designed to only go in one way. if you are sure that it"s in right, make sure that both shafts are in all the way.if one has pulled out a little bit, and isn"t quite in all the way, it could also cause your problem.

Yes the coupler has been removed and reinstalled it will only fit "correctly" one way, one side (pump side) has the pin hole for the carter key.The coupler is already keyed onto the pump shaft .The problem is lining the tranny side splines into the coupler while at the same time pushing the two tractor halves together. They dont make contact until a certain point and by the time they do you lose all visual contact of the coupling whilst pushing the two halves together .The spline/coupling tolerances on the tranny side are very tight. Its like finding a needle in a haystack so to speak. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Sorry I can't help with the model 85. I am looking for a SH MF for a small place. Having trouble finding out the difference between 35 135
50 etc. SH older models. Is there a book that gives a description on all MF models, or can someone just enlighten me.

If you remove the flywheel inspecion cover, you can turn on the input shaft to align the splines. Then the two halves should slide together without any problem.

Thanks for all the replies..... in reply to jjl, 03-24-2005 18:57:07
I finally figured it out today. I removed the pump filter and the carter key and put the coupler on the tranny side shaft. Then pushed the two halves almost together and slid the coupler onto the pump shaft (which had a bit more forgiving tolerance than the tranny side) and pushed the two halves together.Removing the filter allowed me room to replace the key after both halves went together.Again a sincere thank you to all of you guys and your helpful ideas.
