I have a 285 MF that I just had split and had the multi-power valve out and sent to a dealer to be resealed. Now it shifts to high range on its own. Anyone got any ideas. TIA

Hi,
Simple thing first. Check the 'over centre' coil spring at the top of the vertical rod which goes into the gear box. It should give you 'hold' in both positions.
Not so simple thing. There should be a spring loaded ball bearing in the MP valve block. Disconnect the linkage betweem the casing and lever. If you can move the rod freely without any restriction it would appear that the ball or spring has been left out. This seems more likely of the two.
Let us know.
Cheers David P

I don't know the answer but i wish i had known a little bit more about the multi-power before i used it the other day.

I havn't had my tractor very long and have just played with the multi power, not really needing it. Well i have to borrow some implements from my dad who lives about 2 miles away, but the way to his house includes about a 200 yard "dash" down a pretty busy highway. So im tooling along in 3H at about 1800 rpm when i get to the highway
and reach over and shift the multi power to high.
Needless to say i didn't think tractors were supposed to go that fast.
If i had forgotten and not locked my brake pedals together it wouldn't have been a pretty sight.

When I did my 285 it took a bit of trial and error to get that multi power shift lever linkage set up right.

There's a friction screw and washer on the multi-power lever on my MF-135. It needs tightening every few years too keep pressure from sliding it about.

I find the gear splitter on the move handy at times. Remember the rest of the gears aren't synchronized, not even double clutching gets away from grinding the gears.

Its handy when plowing and I get to wet alfalfa roots, drop it down a half gear to keep going, then pop it back up without having to stop.

And when pulling something on the road to go do some custom work, its easier on the clutch to start out in 3 high with the multipower in low, get up to 16 mph, then throttle back (and the multipower lets the tractor free wheel in low) and pull to multipower high range and run the road speed on up to 22 mph without jolting the multipower.

But when the multipower breaks it sucks. Parts are getting hard to find. It is supposed to stand shifting under full load but it ought to last longer if treated a bit more gently.
