WE HAVE A MF 35 DIESEL DELUXE AND SINCE WE'VE HAD IT THE FUEL GAUGE DOESN'T WORK, AND I'M NOT SURE IF ITS THE GAUGE OR THE SENDING UNIT. THE GAUGE SHOWS EMPTY AND NEVER MOVES, I HATE TO START REPLACING PARTS TILL I FIND WHAT IT IS, ANY IDEAS?

One of the key points that David made was that if the electrical and gauge sides are working then grounding out the wire to the sending unit will determine if the gauge is good or not. Do you have power to the gauge? If the gauge hasn't worked since you've owned the tractor, maybe there's not even any power to it. Test the wires to the gauge with a 12v tester to determine if you have any power to the gauge.

First see if the cover plate for the sensor is grounded. It sits on a gasket and all the screws can be loose enough it doesn't get grounded. Then check (by taking out all those screws) the float to see if its on the end of the wire and really floats. If its gone or doesn't float, a cork will work. Coat the cork with SealALL to keep it from soaking up gasoline and ethanol.

The sender can wear, and sometimes you can fix it. Check with a wire between the cover plate and the tractor frame for a ground when the sender isn't mounted. The sender is probably open enough you can tell if the wiper runs against the resistance coil or not. It may take only a bit of bending to fix or it may be worn too for for anything but a new sender.

Hi,
Start by removing the "live" wire from the sender on top of the tank. If you have a key switch, switch to the ignition position and put this wire to earth. If the electrical and gauge sides are working the gauge should go to "full".
Normally the fault is in the sender unit in the tank.
Cheers
David P
