I would like to find out what year this engine was made. It is a Continental Red Seal F162 6681
on a Massey Harris combine? Thanks for any help.

What is the serial number of your engine? The number you gave is the spec. number. You will need the 5 diget serial number. As an example, 40XXX to 44XXX engines were built in 1957 & 1958. This will give you a approx. time it was built.

The only plate on the engine has the engine size which would be the F162 which I would think is the same engine as the 101 JR tractor and then
on the other side of the plate is stamped 6681 that I thought would be the serial no. There is no other number anywhere. It has 52 inch spoked
steel wheels which I assume ment it was built during the WWII era and it has a 10' header and a 24" cylinder. The front of the machine is carried on two steel wheels that pivot with a short tongue
that the tractor would hook to. It has MASSEY HARRIS across either side at the back but no name or number. The sheet metal looks very much like the old Allis Chalmers combines. It even has a straw spreader on it. The engineering looks to be dated about the same time as the thrashing machines. Would this be one of MH's first attempts
at building combines?

If the 6681 number is stamped into the plate it is the serial number. I would be guessing but I think that old of a engine would have been made in the late 30's. I am not a massey collector, so I am guessing again. I think the combine you describe is a model 17 Massey Harris, but I will let someone that knows more about them respond.

Oliverfan;
thanks for your response and I think you are right
about the age. I was amazed to see a machine that old having a 10 foot cutting head and only a 2 foot cylinder. The old pt. clipper combine that I ran as a kid in the fifties had a 6' cut and the thrashing as I recall was the same width. The opening for the grain tank is the same width as the tank itself. I can't find any number on the combine itself.
