Over the past year I have been having numerous issues with my 1959 FE-35, 4cyl diesel tractor. Most notably, extremely hard starting (warm or cold weather), excessive smoking (grey/black all the time) and rapid overheating of the engine causing the injector tips to burn up on me every 4/5 operating hours. After the last 2 months in the shop, I can now say that everything is now working fine. What was found was an improperly timed injection pump (was injecting fuel to the cylinder while the piston was already going down on the power stroke), a cam that had been installed about two teeth out (leaving total timing out about 42 deg.), a starter that had a shorted armature, a defective injector pump, and while not engine related, a severely worn front axle bushing. Now, even in the cold, as long as its been plugged in for as little as twenty minutes, using the thermo-start, she fires right up and works like a champ. Just wanted to say thanks to all who have replied to questions and offered comments on the state of things over the last year or so regarding these issues. THANKS!!!! This is one of the best sites out there, and I get a lot of enjoyment and education out of it! Sincerely, Mike
