Hello,
I was wondering what the prefix letters stand for on the later Massey Harris Tractors. I have a 555 and the serial number is D1SA-20722
Thanks,
Russ

With the A being the last letter in the serial#, it more then likely an H signifying hand clutch

Hi Bruce,
No i checked again the serial number is D1SA-20722. This tractor has a Hand clutch. How rare are M-H 555 diesel western specials with inline injection pump and hand clutches?
Thanks,
Russ

The data book I have on Massey tractors does not give me the break down on how many of each model of the 555 were made.It says there was a total of 3,794 of the different models made from 1955 to 1958.There were two western special models one was gas and one was diesel.Maybe someone else who reads this forum has a book with a better break down of the serial numbers and could give us a exact number that were made.Could you e-mail me a couple of pictures one of the front and one of the back.I would like to see if it is the same as one I am looking at close to home.

From the massey book I have your tractor is a 1956 model. The D-stands for diesel feul. The S-stands for standard axle. From the year of the machine the 1 stands for regular altitude. Are you sure the A is not an F.If it is a F it would stand for foot clutch. Before 1952 the A in serial numbers stood for high altitude engine. From 1952 to 1957 they used a 1 or a 5 to designate the different model of engine.Massey used what the called a high altitude engine or a regular altitude engine.

Must be a high altitude Bruce, when I see you sitting on your 55 you look pretty high up from the ground.
