Last year I put in new sleeves, pistons, etc in my Massy Ferguson 65 diesel tractor. I notice now that it diesels a bit before it gets warmed up. Before the engine rebuild the injectors did not give me any trouble. Whats going on here and what may be a remedy?

Thanks

Could there be 2 copper washers under one injector if the old one wasnt removed during overhaul.

dont know much about masseys but a diesel is a diesel. the best tool you can have is an infared thermometer one cylinder will be extremely warm or cold. only works on a bone cold block thats been sitting if hot or been running temeratures across the exhaust manifold will equalize. you dont say if you are getting puffs of smoke white being unburnt fuel due to lack of heat black too much fuel or lack of air. but an infared thermometer will help narrow down the cylinder. cracking injector lines also works but esp on some of these getting back there to crack the lines is a bear. an infared thermometer is a super tool can be used on motor diagnostics and many more things

Hi Mike.

Could the problem be a difference in compression between cylinders?
with an assumption that the work todate is correctly done ( which also means the valve tappet clearances are set correctly ! ), leaves the valves, valve seats and injectors to test. To find which cylinder or cylinders are misfiring undo the nut on the injector fuel lines to allow fuel to escape and listen to the effect each line makes as you undo then tighten up again, you will soon find the crook cylinder. I would then swap two of the injectors around, using one good and one from a misfiring cylinder, then note the effect again when starting from cold, if the problem shifts to what was the good cylinder then that injector is the culprit, with no change then the valves need attention.
ps if one injector is crook I would still take all of them to be serviced as they need to be set up so that they all release the same amount of fuel at test.

Cheers Arthur from Tassy

sounds like the engine is knocking rapping but as
it warms up it lessens #1 check for injector line leakage ? if no leaks maybe you have dirty nozzles i have had some good luck with howes diesel treat my ford was cackling pretty good and now its gone also fuel consuption is half what it was unbelievable but in my case TRUE !! always had luck with this stuff gaurantee it improve MPG !!! anyway ATF also works fairly well too but for the ford only the howes diesel treat fixed her try it out !!!!

Arthur and Chris,

Thanks for the replies. Arthur, I was checking everything like you suggested but noticed on one that it had a small leak. Fixed that and it sounded better. Chris, I"m going to get some cleaner as you suggested and see if that helps before having them serviced, since they were working fine before the engine rebuild. Also, Chris, your description of the sound as being a knock is exactly what it sounds like.

I"ll work on it a bit and post back with either more questions or the "fix" - hope it"s the latter!

Thanks again...

Mike
