MF maybe?

I am considering getting a 1080 or 1085 Massey. they seem to be pretty cheap and are about the size I am looking for. Are they any good? What is the differences? I know the 1085 is a little newer model. Other than that, I can't see too many differences between the two, other than the sheet metal. What problems do they have? What are the good points?

You can always grab a 285 or 298. Same engine just a bit smaller tractor. I love my 285.

MF Maybe

The 1080 and 1085 are both the same tractor with different sheet metal and different hydraulic controls. Both are good tractors but do have some bad points. Right now my 1080 is in the shop, we are starting at the fan and ending at the pto shaft. It is a long overdue trip and the tractor served me well up the the point of going in the shop. She did go in under her own power I might add.

Good Points.
1. Strong frame if you want to put a loader on it.
2. Engine is a good starting engine even in cold weather.
3. Engine is very easy on fuel.
4. Makes an excellent yard tractor, perfect for haying and brush hogging.

Bad points.
1. Weak planitaries and doesn't like a heavy 3pt load (box blade, mower, light snowblower ok).
2. It has the size of a 100hp tractor but only has 81hp, don't ask it to do 100hp work as it can't.
3. It is not a heavy tillage tractor, never was and never will be.

Hope this helps and good luck
Merle

I have a 1085 with hydraulic pto clutches. Not sure the 1080 have them, I guess they have double clutches like 135/165.
Beside that it is a medium to good tractor. For the price paid I have had good service; I replaced the front wheels with lighter rim to fit 11SL X 16 multi rib tires. I installed MF 298 Hubs to fit the rims, needed just little machining.
My 1085 has Multi-Power and I like it; always work on Hi position, switch to low for short period of time only if needed. Weak points : engine head gasket, power steering pump, hydraulics.I like the tractor but definitely not the best MF.

I practially grew up at a massey dealer was in the place almost on a daly basis in my teens

the 1080-5's were platform tractors and the 285 was a straddle mount we had 285's

steering on all up to the very last ones was attrosious at best put a loader on one (the great 246) it would lift massives amounts ( we lifted a seaborn container with ours one time) at 500hrs we had shake and shimmy steering, a broken steering arm on the main steering shaft

ours leaks fuel down from the top all the time. one time it burnt because a wire rubbed and the fuel took off.--

I have used ours to pull a 12 row cultivator plant with and 8row planter
and do every aspect of hay making..

I wouldnt call it week hydralicly I've seen stuff newer and bigger have problems with a 12row cultivator...

As far as I know, all 1080s had "Independent PTO", not the 2 stage clutch.
