35 vs. 135--Is one better than the other?

Looking for a 30-40 hp tractor & I have heard good things about the MF 35 but little about the 135. Local ads here show more 135's available than 35's. The specs look pretty much the same to me. Is the difference in just the sheet metal and the model number or did they make some real changes that would make the 135 better? Or did they make the 135 worse & I should look only at the 35? Any other model recommendations? Also looking at a JD 2040.

Uses: Maintaining 1,200 ft. gravel driveway, plowing snow once every 5 yrs., cultivating, tilling, & dragging a log out of the woods now & then.

Thanks

Richard Scott

We still have our 35 Diesel Deluxe (since 1963). We also used to have a 135 diesel. These tractors are almost alike as far as engine, drivetrain, and powerlift. The 135 had an alternator which I found more dependable than the 35's 12 volt generator which occasionally needs the armature cleaned off. (minor thing).

I have no experience with the gas versions. Recently I have heard of a problem with these that makes some people cautious with buying them, but I do not remember the exact reason. I know the gas versions sell for less. But in cold weather they would sure start easier.

Overall these are both very dependable and practical tractors. They are a little light for carrying round bales unless you use front weights. The 2040 might do better at that. But for the light work you'll be doing they would both be great.

Front weights and care in operation, if you aren't in the mountains....flat land/slow rolling prarie..... tractor will do fine on 5x6 rolls.

Yeah it's on the low end for size, but it'll do fine...just keep your mind on what you're doing.

Either one is a great choice. Have had one of each (both gas) they worked very well. Sold the 35 and kept the 135. Of all the tractors we kept the 135 because mom likes to use it when raking hay. She won't step foot towards any other tractor that we have or had. The 135 has been on the place for 25 years. Continues to work well. (I prefer the 180D, but that is another story.)

Hello Richard -

We have both. 4 - 35 Perkins, 3 - 135 Perkins. The 35 does almost everything the 135 does, and I think it does it cheaper.

While the 135 looks more stylish, it's basically the same tractor as the 35, with some refinements in the internal hydraulics. These refinements (constant pumping, a few other bells and whistles) seem to be harder for us backyard mechanics to keep in tune. And those bells don't improve productivity in the jobs you mention.

The 135 has a later style Perkins diesel (direct injection) that has a bit more muscle and a tad better fuel efficiency, but generally costs a thou more on the used tractor market.

For my money, the 35 with the Perkins is one of, if not THE, best tractors ever built.

Just look at the number still around, and the availability of economical aftermarket parts.....!

My 3 cents (2 cents US with exchange!)

i work at a massey ferguson dealer in northern va, and the senior mechanic in my shop swears by the mf 135. he thinks it is the best, longest lasting tractor made. this guy has been doing this for a long time, and i trust his judgement. just a thought. :)

Overall I think most will agree that the 135 with Perkins diesel is one of the best and most popular small utility tractors EVER produced. The resale value of which is phenomenal. One of our MF dealers had 2 on his lot right now. One is gas - -$5300; the diesel (fully restored) is $6800. (the 35 is just as dependable)
