I just brought my new 165 home and found that the hitch which had worked fine before I bought it won't go down. It worked when I loaded it on the trailer but once I unloaded it the hitch was all the way up and won't budge back down. The shaft running into the transmission housing that holds the hitch levers had broken and had previously been welded. That weld has broken and there's about an inch of play in shaft when I move the hitch levers. The loose shaft does not have any play in or out of the housing, just a little front back. Any ideas? Someone suggested that a hook in the linkage beneath the inspection plate may have come loose. Help! Thanks, Dave

ONe thing to try before you get too involved - put some weight on it...especially if its cold sometimes they will get stuck up. Jump on it, push it down a bit with a loader if you have one with down pressure.

Hello Dave,
First of all the minor movement in the quadrant (where the levers are) is normally due to the counter sunk screw which retains it in the hydraulic cover coming loose. It can only undo one turn or so and cannot fall out but it is enough to loosen the quadrant.
From what I understand of the the failed weld it seems likely that the positions of the linkages in the hydraulic cover have been upset and the pump control lever no longer responds to commands from the control levers.
With the engine idling, can you hear the relief valve blowing or "knocking" coming from within?
If you can this suggests that the pump is permanently pumping oil instead of allowing the linkage to drop when told to do so.
Assuming you have no problems in the external hitch linkage the only solution is removal of the hydraulic cover and recification of the problem.
Please be aware that the hydraulic cover is heavy and requires a removal procedure as well as special tools to do the job correctly.
Best wishes & good luck
David P

I have a 202 and had the same problem. So what i did is i removed the top inspection plate and found moisture in my gear oil. That was my first problem. The 2 fingers that control the up an down were rusted together. So i drained the oil and freed them up and used alot of neverseizeon them
