My 68 MF 135 desiel has started to charge irratically. At half throttle the amp gage jumps from 0 to 10 back and forth. Then at full throttle it holds steady at about 10-15. At idle it sets at 0 steady. What do I need to check first? Is it altenator or voltage reg. and how do I go about checking both with out gages or meters? Thanks in advance!

Hi, The voltage regulator is mounted on a rubber base, which is held on by two bolts. A ground wire mounts to one of these bolt, only one of these bolt tabs is grounded to the voltage regulator so make sure it is connected to the right one. This can cause problems like you are having. Bill

One other thing that will cause that is a bad ground check the ground cable where it connects to the tractor.

Check the actual charging with a voltage meter. This will help you rule out a bad or going bad guage. A bouncing meter can also mean it is going bad. Anther suspect could the the voltage regulator. It tells the generator when to charge. It could be kicking in and out. If everything checks good then suspect the generator. "Brushes"

I'm gonna say that your brushes are wearing out on your alt. Slow speed they have time to bounce over the commutator of the armature; brush length is short, spring is stretched as a result making for sloppy pressure against the commutator. At high speed they just "float" which seemingly would give a more steady reading.

Not that hard to change and not expensive (if you can get them). NOthing to loose. Change them and see what happens..... lube your bearings while you're in there.

Note: If you'ver never been in there, putting the thing back together can be tricky if you don't pin the brushes out of the way so you can get the commutator past them. Small holes on the rear of the casting. I use a small drill bit. Push the springs up in their container, insert the bit from outside on both brushes. Put her back together and then don't forget to pull the drill bits out.

Also I usually scribe a mark on the 2 halves of the housing (where I broke it open) so that after I get it back together, it will mount. Once I didn't do that and had to disassy to rotate one half so that it would mount to the tractor properly.
