Where is the thermostat located, within the top radiator hose or the housing where the hose attaches? What temp is called for? Any help appreciated..... ..... ...

Thanks guys, been helpful. A friend of mine told me that he thought I should run a 160 thermostat. Just wasn't sure. Now I've got to find the darn thing. Probably in the housing. I noticed last year that it was running hotter than usual, could even smell it. Don't want to ruin a head, especially on this Perkins engine. Thanks again 'fellas..... ..... ....

Sorry, forgot about your other question. My book says "The thermostat is located in a cast iron body between the cylinder head and the top radiator hose".

Dunno on both questions.

Usually the thermostat is located in a cast housing where the upper radiator hose attaches to the engine. Pellet goes toward the engine. Usually the cast housing is held in place with 2 screws.

Temp for the diesel? Mine run 160 or 180 thermostats with the WORKING temp running about 20 degrees above gauge setting. Loafing it will be right at the therm setting.

Only had one tractor get mad at me for running a hotter thermostat. Last year we were talking about running diesels hot (180) so I pulled out my 160 and put in a 180. Went out and worked the tractor (4000 hrs on a 40 yr old tractor) and the tractor started missing and acting up and making funny noises. Put the 160 back in and left well enough alone.

My book says the thermostat begins to open at 170 to 179 degrees F and is fully open at 199 degrees F. C. T.

Looks like it runs the 180. I'll say this: doesn't take long for it to get to operating temp.
