I have just rebuilt and put in a new pin and two bushings back to back , honed to a smooth clearance with a flap wheel , fit beautifully until i put powder graphite in before assembly... Once back together she has seized up tight!. I can hardly move it.Could the powdered graphite packed up??? never used this before. The IT says graphite instead of grease... I think i will take apart and install a allemite grease fitting from underneath to grease between the two bushings. .Input please.Robert Goodfellow, Montreal.

Hello Robert -

Your problem is a bit of a puzzle. Graphite is a good lubricant, and should not cause the binding.

Is it possible the axle hole was worn oval by a worn-out bushing (allowing the pin to wear the axle itself)? I had that on several of ours.

This could allow one of your new bushings to move a bit out into the oval, and the resulting mis-alignment causing the binding.

Hi Robert,
The original design had only one bush to allow full movement with in it's limits. I have fitted two bushes to my 135 without any problem. May be a mathematician could work out the angles but I believe that the distance between the front and rear of the radius rods (side rods) changes as the axle pivots. Having good tyres, no wear in the king pin bearings and good bolts at the front of the radius rods will help keep the geometry correct. Slacken the front bolts a little and the axle should become freer.
Good luck
David P

When I replaced mine in a Ford 640, which is no doubt similar, I drove the bushing in dry. Then I greased the inside of the bushing and screwed the pivot pin in. I had a grease fitting up top, so I drilled the bushing and now use the grease fitting to give it a shot every so often. Has worked fine for me for the last three years..... .

I'll agree about the packing. I think they suggested using graphite as there is no factory grease zerk and the graphite would tend to stay whereas one application of grease would soon wear out.

I am busy this morning but if you still need help, I can go look in my manuals this afternoon.

We are talking about the front axle pivot pin and bushings aren't we?

Sounds like the right thing to do. Never understood why Ford/MF OEM didn't have that zerk there; everyone else does.

Recommend you get a real MF brand Repair Manual and a Parts Manual. Tried IT, waste of time and money, been there done that.
