My MF 175 which i purchased recently has a problem, the pto shaft keeps turning. I can stop it sometime but most of the time it just keeps spining. Is there any easy fix or do i have to live with it? Seems to me it could be dangerous under certain circomstances. thanks in advance.

On tractors with Independent pto that problem is caused by either the pto holding brake is worn out or not holding for some reason or the clutch pack disc are warped from getting hot at sometime and are they dragging. The brake for them was not designed to stop the implement at high speed. The engine should be throttle down to an idle before disengaging the pto to slow them down. The pto clutch pack disc will also last a lot longer if you have the engine somewhere closed to idling speed when engaging the pto. You can replace the brake by removing the liftcover. To replace the pto clutch pack disc the tractor has to be split between the transmission and the rear center housing. If I can be of further help Email me.

Hi Lou,
You don't say whether you have a mechanical or independant PTO. By the model of the tractor it should be a mechanical. I assume that it keeps turning when you press the pedal through the second stage of movement. IF this is the case, adjustment will probably be the answer. With the engine stopped, remove the plate under the clutch housing. Clean away any debris. Shine a light up inside and you will see an adjuster between the springs. The adjustment here should be about 1/16 to 3/32 inch or 1.5 to 2 mm maximum. A drill bit would suit.
Have an assistant operate the pedal and watch how much the bolt moves before hitting and moving the PTO pressure plate backwards. If you have more than the above movement, adjustment is necessary. You will need 2 1/2" unf spanners and a screwdriver or similar to turn the flywheel. Carefully slacken the locknut just enought to be able to unscrew the bolt out. The exact adjustment is not so important but that the three are the same is. Lock the nut when finished and move onto the next. When you press the pedal now, you should feel a definite second stage and the pto should stop. The shaft should stop with the pedal about 1 to 2 inches from the footplate. Any less and you will need to reduce the adjustment. At the front end of the clutch pedal rod is the lever and shaft that goes through the clutch housing. Make sure that the clevis is in the front hole of the lever.
If the pto still refuses to stop, the plate may well be stuck to the pto flywheel or pressure plate in which case it will almost certainly mean splitting the tractor. It may be possible to insert a small flat screwdriver between the lining and plate. You may be lucky.
Good luck
David P
